The Mayor's Committee on Persons with Disabilities of Washington, DC (MCPD), is an advisory entity to the Mayor on programs, services, facilities and activities that impact the lives of District residents with disabilities. The Committee advocates and promotes societal inclusiveness and works jointly with human service providers, businesses, labor unions, local and federal governments to ensure our goal of empowering individuals with physical, mental and medical challenges. Concerned with advocacy issues related to the DC government delivery system and quality customer service, the Mayor's Committee presents testimony before the entire DC City Council and Council legislative committees. MCPD reviews and promotes assistive technology, and works in partnership with foundations and community groups to empower persons with disabilities. MCPD is an information and referral service aiding consumers in leading a more productive and independent life.
One of the major roles of the Committee is to conduct community outreach activities, designed to heighten awareness and sensitize the general public of disability issues. Through public relation campaigns, special events, and correspondence, MCPD accomplishes its goals of heightening the awareness, reforming and contributing in the development of policy and regulations of people with disabilities.
